Tennis
Books & Video -- Ed Krass' B.E.S.T. Serve
By Jack Thompson (March/April 2002) |
In 1991, most coaches considered it ludicrous
to attempt to teach students anything other than
the classic serving technique (i.e. both arms down
together and both arms up together as one tosses
the ball.) In retrospect this seems somewhat odd
-- after all, the ground game has undergone significant
change with an increased emphasis on topspin, open
stances and midcourt put-away shots.
One teacher, however, was and continues to advocate
a new serving method. In the last 80s, Coach Ed
Krass, founder and director of the College Tennis
Academy (now in its 14th year) and former head coach
of the Harvard women's tennis team (1986-1990),
began experimenting with a system which has proven
quite successful with players at all levels of the
game. The concept of the B.E.S.T. serve (which stands
for biomechanically efficient service technique)
centered around the idea of developing a service
method which was compact, physiologically less stressful
on the shoulder and more in keeping mechanically
with the "throwing motion."
As Coach Krass points out early in the video --
"when a quarterback or baseball pitcher throws a
ball, they immediately raise the ball to a cocked
position above their throwing shoulder... they don't
drop the throwing hand/ball below their waist and
then raise it up as is the case with the tennis
player who employs the classic service motion."
Fundamentally this analogy does make sense -- the
service is nothing more than throwing the racquet
without letting go.
A number of successful coaches give testimony to
the effectiveness of the B.E.S.T. Serve and Dr.
Irving Glick (head physician at the U.S. Open) states...
"this new service technique appreciably reduces
tennis related shoulder injuries." The thing I really
liked about this video was the step by step fashion
that coach Krass used to teach the method. The narrative
sequence and filming angles were exceptional and
in my opinion, virtually any player or coach could
learn this technique by watching the video. The
before and after results attained with Coach Hayes'
own serve were quite impressive.
I would highly recommend this video to anyone. I'm
not saying that this service method is for everyone
(just as the two-handed backhand isn't for everyone),
but I have had some amazing results using this technique
with some of my own students. The fact that it was
produced in 1991 doesn't lessen it's usefulness.
With Andy Roddick and other high profile professional
and collegiate players using this serve, it points
to one thing -- Coach Krass was well ahead of his
time. If you're having service woes, this could
well be the cure.
Incidentally, if your child or someone you know
is seeking a tennis scholarship, the college tennis
academy that Krass runs is the best thing going.

"The B.E.S.T. Serve" -- A video created by Ed Krass
Reviewed by Claire Walton,
Atlantic Racquet Press (Fall 2003) |
"The B.E.S.T. Serve" video vividly demonstrates
Coach Ed Krass' commitment to helping players
at all levels play to the best of their ability.
It also demonstrates Krass' commitment to promoting
player health, comfort and wellness -- thereby helping
more people enjoy "the sport for a lifetime" for
as long as possible, at as high a level as possible.
The film focuses on teaching Krass' trademark "Biomechanically
Efficient Service Technique." This updated approach
to teaching the serve emphasizes developing speed
and consistency while taking pressure off of the
shoulder, making it less prone to injury as compared
to the traditional service motion. This is especially
helpful for those players who have had rotator cuff
problems.
Unlike some instructional videos, "The B.E.S.T.
Serve" is easy to follow and understand. Krass and
the players featured clearly break down (visually
and orally) the elements of the stroke and then
put them together in an equally lucid fashion. After
laying this foundation, the team demonstrates how
to achieve a variety of spins using the B.E.S.T.
approach. According to Krass, benefits associated
with this easy-to-learn technique include explosive
power, simplicity, fluidity, consistency, accuracy
and deception, as well as the desired decrease in
shoulder stress. Want to see it in action? Check
out Andy Roddick.
"The B.E.S.T. Serve" is a product of Krass' substantial
experience playing and coaching at the elite level.
A former title-winning coach at both Clemson and
Harvard, Krass today continues to develop complete
players through his College Tennis Exposure Camps
and programs, founded in 1989. A bastion for years
at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, where he
hosts a summer tennis camp for competitive high
school players ages 15-18, Krass brings dozens of
notable college tennis coaches to provide strategy,
stroke improvement, training tips and insight into
obtaining scholarships for the camp attendees. Krass
also offers camps in Michigan and Florida every
year. He claims to offer the only training camp
taught exclusively by college coaches. |
